I am a video game developer, mostly known for creating Fallout. I plan to use this channel to tell stories about game development, including stories about design, programming, team building, working for development companies, pitching to game publishers, and even a few stories about my short stint as a co-owner of a company, Troika Games. I have been doing this for more than forty years, so I have a lot of stories to tell.
I also eat a lot of dark chocolate.

Would I Work On Fallout Again?
I answer my channel's most frequently asked question, would I work on a new Fallout? TLDW: Maybe...what's new about it?

Satan has the fallout IP ):
i respect your decision, your health, life, and experience all matter much more than money. they get finnicky when they see you dont operate on the same level. anyways, i honestly hope Josh and the others dont feel the same way simply because the minds with the original foundational ideas are extremely valuable. alas Fallout has left its legacy and a beautiful one. Thanks for the insight Tim.
Thanks for the video as per usual Tim. Having said all this, what kinds of things or kinds of games have you not made that you would like to, or would say yes to? As a total outsider to development, it’s not super easy for me to brainstorm what you might consider “new.” I’d love to hear your thoughts on this to know what kind of concrete ideas you would like to work on.
This kinda has to do with the whole confidence theme I brought up before. Even if it doesn't seem like it. Man idk what to say other than you are a very inspiring person The fact you even began uploading all this on youtube! We are blessed by you for this content! Thank you.. Sincerely Your honest insights are very worthwhile
Make me a weird horror game set in 17th century England, with guns and magic-users. I will play with a flowers, which is also something new.
What I’m hearing is if #TodHoward is not involved it’s a probably….
eeeehhhh aguante Godot. Unity cuantas copas tené?
Hi, Tim. I want to ask about Arcanum. When you get to the quest "to get to isle of Despair and investigate", asking NPCs around in Tarant, some say " Isle of Despair? Do you mean Black isle? " Was it an intentional Easteregg?
Scary face on the thumbnail
It wouldn't matter if you worked on fallout or not. You simped for the TV series. You clearly no longer have a heart for good story telling anymore.
Such a crime for him to enjoy seeing the IP he created from scratch succeed almost 30 years later lmao
@@keiski72 I wouldn't call a work of art being smeared in feces something that should be "enjoyable"
Hey Tim, its probably a long shot for this to ever happen, but I think the dream Fallout game would be you and Todd Howard together working at co producers/directors. Todd has said that the next Fallout may be his last one, and you're not getting any younger either unfortunately. Any chance this would ever happen?
How do you feel about the mod/overhaul fallout:London
The question then becomes, you know Fallout and you know game dev, what would be your dream project that you could do in the Fallout universe? Tabletop RPG? Fully explore what Fallout Tactics tried to do back in the day? Fallout as a stealth game? If someone asked you to make up a pitch for a Fallout project you'd be excited to work on, where does your mind take you?
A new fallout shouldn't interest players for the same reason. Id like to see a Post-post-apocalypse fallout that goes full sci-fi. Ghouls build space stations?
Gotta appreciate your tolerance for intolerant people. You have a very respectful and respectable way of addressing them. There's also people like me who are bi (or gay) and don't have time for modern pride stuff. I personally think some of it is over the top and overly "aggressive", for want of a better word. I initially intended to skip this video before you told people to skip the video but decided to stay after your measured and respectful approach to those of us who who wouldn't normally give mich time to such a video.
Aww maaaaan, I was always hoping if there was another Obsidian Fallout spinoff that they'd bring you in, but from the sounds of it that would never happen T_T nonetheless, can't help but respect your reasoning there... game on, brotha
do you play fallout 76? its fun!
Never used creation engine before!!
port to fallotu 1 sega saturn and ps1. like suppose to be. or n64 on cartridge. its intresthing enough.
Didn't get the reference, but youtube just reconmended the videos you did with him and i watched them both. They were fun videos, but i think i'll avoid trying to replicate as i'm sure a thimble full would knock me out
can you get the dev team to please add controller support to pillars of eternity on steam?
So this begs the question.. What's new about The Outer Worlds 2? :O
Hello Tim! Watching this video has me wondering, what differences are there between developing for console vs computer? Do you have any preferences? Also, what exactly made the PS3 more difficult to develop for than the Xbox? Thanks for the video!
Fallout: Upper Peninsula when
Fallout VR confirmed! (just kidding)
Oh after watching I thought that’s actually a very good point . There’s defintely got to be a unique idea , something that is behind surface level improvements to be a project that’s worth embarking on . So I understand the hesitation because there’s got to be something almost like an idea that hasn’t been done before , hard to know what that idea is really . What if they remade fallout 1 the exact same story and all that but reimagined In a 3d world the way fallouts 1 cutscenes envisioned the world . I think if done right it would be awsome to experience the master and , the , mariposa military base, and I think it would be interesting if the mechanics were somehow a mix between the old and the new. Just a thought,
Maybe as vr develops , as a medium it would be intriguing to revisit fallout , with new game mechanics , the master and mariposa , and envisioning it in the style of the original cutscenes .
Yeah, you’re making career decisions in a privileged position but you earned that privilege. You’re a veteran game developer who was involved in many successful or at the very least popular games. You’ve said several times that young developers and you yourself didn’t have much say in what you did as a rookie, but after over a decade you earned your position and now with three decades long f experience you definitely earned the right to be picky.
Pls say yes
Tim growing up the PS3 was the system i played when i was getting into gaming. Its one of my favorite systems i often hear it was a hard system to program on. But once programmers mastered it could do stuff that would lag the 360. What was your experience with it. If you read this thanks for creating Fallout and this channel you have become one of my favorite game directors up there with Hideo Kojima.
My experience with the PS3 was programming on South Park: The Stick Of Truth ua-cam.com/video/vQj5rJry4Pw/v-deo.html
@@CainOnGames I didn't think you'd reply thanks. How was it was it as painful as other programmers say it was?
@@CainOnGames Watched the vid i can see why PS4 and the current PS5 switched over to similar PC infrastructure. It was a challenge with break points and had bugs exclusive to that. No wonder it had a lot of ports that ran worst than the 360 and PC.
Tim: "i dont really care about realism" Also Tim: *spent i believe he said weeks on researching for FEV, gets praised by a professional in the field*
Here, I will give you a neat world that I have been cooking up. I likely won't do anything with it and it would be an interesting game to make. A lot of the magic of video games is lost when you peel the curtain back and see the tedious process of making a great game. But the idea is an RPG set in an idiocracy type of world. No one has done it. You being the smartest man in the world hasn't been there yet. It can be a satyrical take on the direction the world is headed where influencers box and try to play a game as fast as possible. Factions would be interesting and the world would be unique and a game that in a sense mocks the ridiculousness of the current direction that society is going. An Idiocracy RPG would likely be a great game and one that everyone would enjoy. I do think Outer Worlds kind of hit that nail on the head though. Best of luck in whatever you do. Money is meaningless in the grand scheme of things and I am glad you didn't sell out.
Here me out. What if this new Fallout game was modernised version of old Fallouts taking place during 1-2 (or maybe few years before or after), possibly different setting - HOWEVER, from dev perspective it would allow to explore AI behaviour of different tribes and give opportunity to partially implement procedurally generated content, quests, dialogues and behaviour. Tim was talking in one of his videos about something similar and that it is within his areas of interest. He was talking about Player making decisions, that might win one side over, but enrage the other and he was discussing how it could be mixed together with handcrafted and randomised/procedurally generated content allowing to create each playthrough very unique . I cannot remember which vid it was, but it sounded like really cool concept worth exploring (once I find the vid I will add another comment, for now I remember, that Fallout and Arcanum was referenced a lot in the vid)
The title was - Procedural vs. Handmade Content . So imagine classic style Fallout, but with procedurally generated and radiant content taken to whole new level. Perhaps AI tech like ChatGpt could be involved too to generate dialogues and 'awareness' in NPCs. Would that be interesting enough?
Hey Tim! If you were to start out with game dev today, what where would you go? If you could start an indie studio, how would your company look like? How would you advance in from one game to the next? What dev ecosystem would you be in? If my answers here are already answered, I would welcome a link! Thank you!
Yuck, the dude wearing a Balenciaga shirt.
Will you pitch arcanum 2?
Wouldn't it be cool to go back to a world you worked on in a completely different perspective? You did Fallout top down but First Person is so different. I know you've done 1st person (very recently even) but there must be some nostalgia going back to a world so many years later.
lol “a new perk.” Accurate 😂
As someone who is also colorblind I agree that Colorblind mode does help out a lot. Some times it makes it weird when it's something that I'm used to seeing normally in it's color pallet, but the option is greatly appreciated!
okay tim but what about my idea that’s super special and amazing because it came from me. obviously i am the outlier
Love Tim !
What sort of new thing to Fallout would you be interested in? Been loving the videos. Could listen to you talk about literally anything. And thank you for creating one of my favorite IPs of all time.
Fallout pixel farming sim when?
My biggest take away from this Tim, is you followed you passion, and what an awesome ride it has been!
One sentence pitch: "What if war could change?"
The duality of Humanity doesn't change though, that's the point of the line "War Never Changes"
I honestly don't understand this at *all*. I mean, its your life, your call, but not doing something because there's nothing new? You obviously don't apply that to food, or playing games, or presumably consuming other media. Even putting privilege aside I can't wrap my mind around "I enjoy developing games, but only if there's something new". Like, if novelty is a requirement you don't enjoy development that much then really, do you? Maybe, I just don't get it. As far as FO specifically, I don't get not wanting to do a FO1 remake. A FO sequel, okay, that's something you've done, but you haven't reimagined a game before, you haven't taken an isometric CRPG and adapted it into a first person action RPG. You haven't gone in and revisited something you made a long time ago and reconsidered every aspect of it, fixed everything you regretted, improved what you loved. I dunno, that seems like a new experience to me even if it involves the same vault, the same basic water chip story, etc. Love your videos, please don't take any of this as criticism. ✌
🖤🖤🖤 this "PG: 13" s**t nowadays is just absolutely atrocious..
For something new, how about a Fallout VR game?? I think that would be super cool
The biggest question is would you ever make your own game cause you know you would get alot of love
"Fallout 5" is like Norway these days. - I'd rather work against it! All respect to Tim Cain! I love the ol' "Fallout". Mark Morgan's soundtrack(!) absolutely ominously beautiful, timeless and C.O.O.L!
🖤🖤🖤 this "PG: 13" s**t nowadays is just absolutely atrocious..

I so badly want a sequel to New Vegas taking place in Nevada or Arizona. Using Fallout 4's engine or better but with New Vegas quality dialogue and storyline writing. I don't remember the last game I pre-ordered, but I'd pre-order that game immediately if I could. I'd also take a remake of New Vegas in Fallout 4's engine or better, with all the same writing.
